The C.V.O.S.M. [Cedar Valley “O” Scale Modelers} was formed as a hobby club in February of 1996 for the purpose of promoting greater cooperation and fellowship among “O” scale model railroaders in the Northeast Iowa area. Also to construct, display and operate an “O” scale layout known as the Cedar Valley Railroad. Of the eleven charter members nine are still active and assisting in the club’s growth and development. The club was incorporated as a non-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Iowa on March 18th, 1996.
In May of 1996, the club members agreed to build a permanent model railroad display in the basement of the building at 301 Main Street, Cedar Falls. An area of approximately 946 square feet was available and the formidable task of repairs and general cleanup of the premises began. The work progressed over a period of several months during which time obsolete pipes were removed, one wall was replaced and another received major repairs. Additional lighting was installed and a generous amount of white and blue paint was applied to the ceiling and walls respectively. An outside stairway that had been closed off for many years was reopened and repaired. Members now use these stairs to access the clubroom during hours when the first floor business is closed. Renovation of the clubroom area was completed and the club began formally leasing the space commencing October 1st. 1996.
Construction of the layout began in September of 1996. “L” girder bench work was erected with lattice sub-roadbed and homosote on risers. Code 125 nickel-silver flex track was used for the mainline trackage. Yard areas have a plywood surface overlaid with homosote. All turnouts and crossovers are hand laid on wood crossties. The minimum radius of the mainline tracks is 68” for the inside loop and 72” for the outside loop which should permit operation of the largest locomotives now available in “O” scale.
The layout has about 220 feet of mainline track, a 135 foot branch line and a 100+ car-switching yard. Engine facilities include a three-stall roundhouse, turntable and diesel house. Three hidden storage tracks hold complete trains. Block control permits multiple operations. The individual members own all locomotives and rolling stock.
Visitors and prospective members may see the layout on Thursday nights at 7 P.M. or by appointment.
